For centuries family and friends gather around the table to share a meal. These meals bring people together. In the BDSM community we do the same thing except we do it in the most formal and ritualist style imaginable. We do it for our chosen family, our friends, and our community.
Formal dining and formal dining rooms have been around for many generations. During the Ancient and Medieval time, the Aristocratic Greeks and Romans had dedicated spaces for eating and great halls for communal feasting to display power and wealth. Their meals were elaborate events with complex etiquette and elaborate presentations.
As for the Renaissance to the Victorian Era the concept of a separate parlor for guest emerged, and by the Victorian era, the form dining room became a symbol of social status in many homes. These rooms were set aside for entertaining guest.
Now the 18th Century to Present saw the birth of the first fine dining restaurants like La Grande Taverne de Lourdes in Paris (1782), which offered fine food, elegant surroundings, and service, marking a shift towards a more formalized dining experience outside the home.
So how did this become a part of the BDSM Community?
The history of High Protocol Dining within the BDSM community is not tied to a single documented moment or event. Rather, it evolved organically from a blend of structured, etiquette-based traditions and power exchange practices. High Protocol Dining draws its inspiration from historical, military, and aristocratic models of formality, discipline, and decorum.
Early expressions of structured BDSM can be traced to the leather subculture, which established a foundation of hierarchy, respect, and ritualized behavior. Rooted in a military framework, the leather community developed formalized systems of rank, protocol, and etiquette—rules that governed not only service and behavior but also social and public interactions, including dining.
From these origins, the concept of High Protocol Dining began to take shape. Formal rules, titles, and rituals were adapted and expanded to reinforce and visually express the power exchange dynamic between Dominant and submissive. Over time, these dinners evolved into ceremonial and educational experiences; celebrating discipline, devotion, and elegance while honoring the traditions that connect service, respect, and ritual within the BDSM community.
